Food for fuel for ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon & 10k runners!

On Sunday 23rd April, Southampton will welcome thousands of runners as the ABP Southampton Marathon; Half Marathon and 10k race takes place across the city.

With months of training plans, healthy eating and mental preparation coming to an end, runners will be looking to carb-load their appetites on the week and few days ahead of the race.

Oxford Street, as the home of independent dining in Southampton and of course, serving great, fresh and locally sourced food is perfect for pre-race carb-loading.

Here’s a round up of dishes to try:

Breakfast:

Oxford Street’s newest artisan venue –  Docks Southampton serves up a tasty Avocado on Toast. Whilst avocado often gets a bad name for being high in fat (but its good fat!!) they are an excellent sports fuel. They containing over 35 % more potassium than a banana and plenty of protein and fibre to keep energy levels up.  The Docks Southampton serve the avocado on sourdough toast with hints of chilli and lime.

Avo toast. Crushed avocado with lime and seasoning. The good stuff 😎 #avocadotoast #healthyfood #nutrition #goodfood #sourdough

Lunch

For a lunchtime fuelling, head to Simons at Oxfords and fill up on delicious Potato Gnocchi with provencal vegetables in and tomato and apple ragout or for a lighter option, Pan Roasted Salmon and nicoise salad.

The London Hotel has a great lunch menu with lots of pub classics from Ham, Egg and Chips to All Day Breakfasts and burgers. Opt for the fibre-packed Jacket Potato with beans and salad.

Dinner

For the ultimate pasta carb loading, Max’s Bar and Brasserie serves traditional and authentic Italian cuisine.  With daily pasta specials, risotto and gluten free pasta options you can choose from swordfish, chicken or vegetables to accompany your pasta. Try the Cacciatora – chicken fillet, mushrooms, olives, capers, onion, peppers and pasta in a spicy marinara sauce.

Treat Yourself!

Don’t forget that as well as carb-loading and fuelling your body, you also need to ensure you are hydrated and drink plenty of fluid. Ahead of your race opt for soft drinks. But when the race is done, enjoy a well deserved pint of something cold or glass of wine at The Grapes.

Good luck to all the runners!
